Divine Simbi-Ndhlukula: 2019 Forbes Africa Business Woman of the Year

Divine Simbi-Ndhlukula is a Zimbabwean national who, from a very young age, envisioned herself running her own large business. Her dreams did come true and to date, Divine is running a company that has grown to be the leading security services provider in Zimbabwe.

In December 1998, a determined Divine set up Securico Security Serviceswhich would later become the first in Zimbabwe’s security industry to attain the internationally recognised ISO9001 QMS. At its inception, the company had just four employees who operated from Divine’s cottage which she transformed into an office. There were three security operatives and two administrators of which Divine, now Managing Director of the company, was one.

In a remarkable display of resilience and being able to successfully run a business, Divine has been able to grow her staff from the four employees she started with to over 3000 employees. When they started, the company mainly offered guarding services. Now, Securico Security Services specialises in transporting cash, gold bullion and other valuables. The company also provides on-site banking where some staff are deployed to receive cash from clients’ customers.

The businesswoman firmly believes that there’s no easy road to anywhere worth going to. Even in her business venture, she has had to acquire the necessary skills to complement her hard work, discipline, commitment and determination. All this ensured her business would withstand the political and socio-economic turbulence Zimbabwe has been riddled with for many years.

Her efforts have not gone unnoticed as Divine has received various accolades in recognition of her success. Recently, she scooped the coveted Forbes Africa Business Woman of the Year award at a summit held in Durban, South Africa on the 8th of March. Some of her other awards include the Legatum Africa Awards for Entrepreneurship Grand Prize (2011) and the EY World Entrepreneur Award — Southern Africa (2014). Her company has won the Super Brand of the Year (Security Sector) from 2012 to 2016.

Divine holds various qualifications including a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from Midlands State University, one of Zimbabwe’s tertiary institutions. She also holds an honorary MBA from Women’s University in Africa, another one of the country’s universities. This degree was conferred upon her in recognition of her business leadership and efforts to advance gender equality.

The multi-award winner says her one of her biggest lessons in business is that nothing comes easy. She also believes that every good deed is a door opener and that key to her success “is loving and connecting with people who are the seeds of great things to come”. This is why Divine strives to support others while maintaining her personal integrity.
